If anyone is having problems getting the search by serial number to work, make sure you rescan your devices and then it should work properly. Also note that spaces in serial numbers (such as the ones generated by VMware) don’t work, but you can do partial matches like scanning for “VMware” and that should return all devices with a serial number including that string.
