What content or info would you like to see on the community homepage?

This quarter I’m working on changing the default community homepage to include more useful information from other sources, such as the latest KB articles, new features, and other news. What sorts of things would you like to see on the homepage of the community besides the discussion topics?

I’m not sure how much control you have over discourse’s layout but it’d be kinda sweet to break things up a bit with some thumbnails to blog entries, KB’s, other articles, etc… in this space where the red squiggle line is:


Also, you could include some more categories so the listing on the left is a bit “longer” but as for what categories, I’d have to think on that. You obviously don’t want to stray too far from the product but it’d be cool to broaden out the “General IT” category into some more defined IT categories.

The site is highly customizable so we can do whatever we like in terms of changes. I typically like to put the extra content on the right sidebar, but we could put some stuff above the discussions as well. If there’s any landing pages that you’ve seen that you like the design of, feel free to link to them or post screenshots.

I guess I should have clarified, just small thumbs that don’t go beyond the left and right limits of the current two pillars of categories and topics, if that makes sense. Right now it’s very text-heavy so I thought some small image-driven pieces would break things up a bit and bring in a bit more life to the overall look and feel of the main splash.

Also, I think you should change the entire background to my avatar checkered about a billion times so it looks like a dimforest crazy-eye puzzle.

Yeah we can make that area small enough that it doesn’t push the conversations below the fold. Also your background idea is perfect. We’re even thinking of doing a physical wallpaper in our office with your avatar.
